Your home’s toilets, sinks, disposals, showers and tubs all flow to the city’s wastewater treatment plant. The plant cleans the wastewater and returns it to creeks, rivers and lakes.
So please don’t flush or drain:
- Solid or gooey things that don’t break down. These can clog the treatment plant and the pipes leading to it.
- Drugs and other hazardous chemicals. These need extra treatment to keep water safe.
- Flushable wipes. Even wipes that are labeled "flushable" do not break down and will cause clogs.
All can make your sewer service cost more — and can also clog or damage your house’s pipes.
Help us keep your sewer cost under control:
Drain only soap (including shampoos and detergents) and water.
Flush only pee, poo and toilet paper.
Here are some things that don’t belong in toilets and drains:
- Baby wipes
- Chemicals and solvents
- Cigar tips
- Cigarette butts
- Cloth, rags, towels
- Coffee grounds
- Condoms
- Cotton swabs
- Dental floss
- Diapers
- Fats and cooking oil
- Feminine hygiene products
- Flushable wipes
- Grease
- Hypodermic needles
- Kitty litter
- Matches and lighters
- Medications
- Paint
- Paper towels
- Plastic bags and bottles
- Toothpicks
- Vitamins
Do these instead
- Scrape food from plates, pots and pans into the trash —or compost it.
- Pour cooking fats, grease and oils into empty cans or other food containers. Freeze the container, then put it in the trash.
- Transport chemicals, solvents and paint to a drop-off point for hazardous materials.
- What about “Flushable” wipes? Don’t flush them! They don’t break down like toilet paper, so they cause clogs.
